"A Time and Place, The Making of an Immigrant"

Franz Beisser has an uncanny ability to tell_the story of his early life in
such a way that the reader feels part of it.

One hundred thirty short stories and anecdotes from Franz Beisser's early
life span the years from war-torn Germany in 1943, through postwar occupied
Germany, to the momentous anxieties he experienced during the first two
years after he came to America in 1955.

The easy-to-read stories create a feeling of being there with Beisser. His
wonderful sense of humor and humility flows throughout the book. While his
stories may seem trivial at times, they capture what stayed in his memory
for so long. Those tidbits from his early years are little colorful tiles
that form the mosaic of A Time and Place.

We take for granted that we no longer "survive by the sweat of our brow."
When we want to fill our food pantries we are almost overwhelmed at the
choices in our local market. Indoor plumbing, heat, cooking and other
"mundane" items are taken for granted in our daily life. Journey back in
time with a normal German family as they negotiate some of the toughest
times World War II had to offer and then begin a new life in the United
States.

Franz Beisser's pen and ink illustrations, along with photos from what he's
seen and done, add to the impact of his book.
